The Secret Lacks Spirituality?
By Cathy Lane | March 28, 2007
I’ve been surfing many forums and the issue of how religion and spirituality fit in to The Secret and the Law of Attraction really fascinates me. Many Christians feel that The Secret is not in fact a Secret, they have known about this for centuries. We know great figures throughout history like Shakespeare and Newton have known this; so they have a point.
BUT Does The Secret lack spirituality? Is it Hypocritical to follow The Secret and practice religion? Check out this take from a devout Christian who feels that The secret has veered away from the spiritual path.
One potential View: Paula Quirk
With the Law of Attraction being all the rage I decided it was time to develop a site that would place emphasis on the SPIRITUAL aspect of the Law of Attraction since the concept is rooted in the Bible, anyway.
It is my belief that it is not an impersonal “Universe” that allows us to use our thoughts, feelings and actions to manifest a better life. It is God, Jehovah Jireh, who is the ultimate provider and healer. It is He who allows us use our minds, our gifts and our talents so that we may do HIS good work.
Spirituality and the “Secret”
The issue I have with the “Secret,” is not the innate message (I’m all for the Law of Attraction, obviously) but the delivery of it. The DVD and book constantly make reference to the Universe, the Universe, the Universe, almost as though God and Jesus Christ are just par for the course. Oh, there is mention of them alright, but very casual without the sense of reverence you would expect given the subject matter.
Beyond that, the “Secret” has now become this big franchise, meaning that it is moving into the realm of over-marketing and over-commercialism. Remember “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”
Now we know that God does not want us to be poor. There is nothing wrong in making money. He wants us to have lots of riches — but it is to glorify and magnify his name; to bring others to Christ and to serve a higher purpose.
Consequently, I feel it is time to put spirituality back into the “Secret” so that it doesn’t get lost in the attraction shuffle.
Join the Debate
There’s one take, BUT come on- there’s so many more questions that are left unanswered. I’ve seen so many differences in opinion on this matter and I want to know where you stand. The movie The Secret featured religious visionaries such as Michael Beckwith, founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center who are recognized throughout the world.
Does The Secret go hand and hand with Religion?
Does the Law of Attraction go hand and hand with Religion?
Has The Secret Lost its Spirituality?
God doesn’t want us to be poor, BUT does The Secret take it too far?
Is there hypocrisy here? Where does it Lie?
What is the True Message of The Secret?

JUST WANTED TO MAKE A COMMENT ON ‘THE UNIVERSE’ VS ‘THE GOD OF THE BIBLE’, JEHOVAH JIREH. I THINK ASKING OURSELVES WHO GOD IS, IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS WE CAN ASK OURSELVES. WE COULD JOURNAL AND WRITE OUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT ‘WHO GOD IS’ FOR DAYS AND WEEKS AND I HAVE.IS HE A BEING IN THE SKY WITH A LONG WHITE BEARD? DOES HE SAY SALLY YOU GET THIS AND JOE YOU DON’T GET TO HAVE THAT? IF GOD IS OMNIPRESENT, OMNIESCENT AND OMNIPOTENT THAT MEANS GOD IS ALL KNOWING, PRESENT EVERYWHERE, IS ALL POWERFUL, IS INTELLIGENCE AND A FORCE FOR GOOD AND FOR LOVE. THIS INTELLIGENCE IS IN EVERY BLADE OF GRASS, KNOWS HOW TO DO EVERYTHING, KNOWS PERFECTLY HOW TO BRING THINGS TOGETHER..HOW TO FIND YOU THE PERFECT MATE, ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY THE BILLS, WHERE YOU NEED TO GO TO SCHOOL AND IF GOD CALLS YOU TO A DESTINY, HE KNOWS PERFECTLY HOW TO ORCHESTRATE YOUR LIFE AND ALL THE EVENTS IN YOUR LIFE TO BRING ABOUT HIS WILL. HIS WILL IS ALWAYS PERFECT LOVE AND INCLUDES WHAT WE CALL HARDSHIP. WANTING TO GET THROUGH MEDICAL SCHOOL MAY OR MAY NOT BE DIFFICULT AND A STRUGGLE FOR SOME.THE CAVEAT HERE IS, ARE WE LISTENING? ARE WE COOPERATING? ARE WE EXPECTING GOOD? DO WE KNOW GOD? TRY JOURNALING YOUR REAL AND TRUE THOUGHTS ABOUT WHO GOD IS, WHO AND WHAT YOU THINK GOD IS TO YOU AND TO EVERYONE ELSE.IT WILL TURN OUT TO BE TIME WELL SPENT.

When I heard the lady on the Oprah broadcast that featured Michael and James Ray, I felt that Michael showed great compassion, love and wisdom in giving his answer.
I come from a very strict ‘Evangelical Christian’ background. I graduated from an evangelical college and was senior minister in an evangelical church for several years. I could mention the names of some of my peers and most evangelicals would readily know who they are.
We seem to get hung up on the terms that we use. I agree that the term ‘Universe’ does not encompass all that God is. It does give, however, an aspect of God. That God does in fact fill the ‘universe’. The Bible states this over and over again.
My feeling is that the New Thought folks, like Michael Beckwith and others, do want to distinguish themselves from the negative issues of most evangelicals.
In my view, the evangelical church has missed filling a need that is inherent in the Bible. That is, love has been pushed to a position that is sub-standard to other ‘issues’. These ‘issues’ seem to include moral, political and certain philosophical aspects.
I will admit that I walked away from the ‘evangelical church’ for that very reason. Too much hate, in-fighting, criticism, anger, slander, etc. I’m certainly not against the ‘evangelical church’. However, I’m certainly not there in my thinking any longer.
Several years ago, I found myself ‘demonizing’ anything that looked to be ‘new age’ or anything outside of what I felt was true spirituality. Then, I watched some very good friends go through some rather large life altering situations and be labeled, condemned and ostracized in a very harsh way. I knew then, that I had to get away from it.
There is a rub with evangelicals when it comes to ‘New Thought’ teachings. I don’t see the rub going the other way. New Thought people seem to be more about what they are ‘for’ rather than what they are ‘against’. Having seen the coin from both sides, I have easily gravitated to these people without losing my love for God.
In fact, I would have to add that my experience with God is greatly enhanced by where I am now in my life.
Oh, one last thing. I’m not here to argue nor contend with anyone. Just to truthfully give my perspective on this issue. I have no interest in nor will I, enter into debate regarding this subject.
The best to all,
Michael Murphy

Michael, its very refreshing to read your comments which are much appreciated. I had the advantage of growing up with no religion forced down my throat, and could therefore allow whatever came up in my adult life to determine in which direction I would go. I found spirituality, and am very glad I did. I cannot imagine such a punishing, mean God as the one I read Evangelicals and others try to live with. Surely if God loves us, He/She (yes, why not?) would not just hate and punish His/Her own creation in such a way, and threaten us with such retribution? “Love” means also something which is offered when you make mistakes …
As a business consultant, its my opinion that organized religion was created like the perfect business plan: create a need or condition that didn’t exist before (sin) and then offer the solution, at a price, for those who wish to be “healed”. We see this now with things like “restless leg syndrome”, its very clever. Lucky for you (and smart of you too) that you escaped into a more peaceful world view with your more compassionate spirituality. Having seen Michael Beckwith speak several times recently (I go to his church in LA from time to time and have seen him at seminars, etc) I can say he really is an inspiration and his multi-racial church an amazingly wonderful realization of how a “rainbow coalition” of people can come together to love God.

Michael,
This is exactly why I like Joel Osteen.
I have attended his Church numerous times.
Love for self and others is his message.
There is no “hate, in-fighting, criticism, anger, slander” in his ministry. He definitely follows ’say what your are for instead what you are against’. He also has a policy of ‘no politics from the pulpit.” No wonder why he is bashed by so many Evangelicals.
So many other ‘ministers’ don’t care if you are a Christian unless you are their TYPE of Christian. They are more worried about what Church you attend than whether or not you love Jesus.
