The Esther and Jerry Hicks Omission Explained
By Cathy Lane | March 9, 2007
Esther and Jerry Hicks have been omitted from the official list of Secret Teachers. This has been met by a great deal of disappoint by avid Secret fans because of the powerful message Esther delivered in the full length original version of the inspirational movie. Many of you have been left asking WHY?. . .
I have received numerous amounts of feedback in a short space of time concerning this issue and want to clear it up with you. I’ll share their story along the way.
Esther and Jerry Hicks have been teaching the Law of Attraction through the teachings of Abraham for over 20 years (since 1986 in fact).
They featured in the original version of The Secret but were subsequently omitted due to problems with the contract. I’ve been researching and surfing forums to find out why and this is what I’ve found out:
I’ll let Jerry and Esther explain what happened:
The Concept
Nearly two years ago, while on-board our Mexican Riviera Cruise, Prime Time Productions did an interview with Jerry and me, and with Abraham, in response to an agreement that we had all carefully crafted together for a television show that was to be aired in Australia called “The Secret.”
We were told that “The Secret” would be based on our work and that they would seek out other teachers who were in alignment with our work. We reviewed, on DVD, two other projects that had been created by this production company and found them to be beautifully done, and good-feeling pieces.
Their Strides into the Public Domain
Since Jerry and I had never before stepped into the public forum in that way with our Abraham work, we followed the advice of our publisher, who introduced us to an intellectual property rights attorney who assisted us in drafting the agreement which would guide our involvement with this project.
He explained to us that although he had included in the intellectual property rights license agreement that we were to receive a small percentage of the net profit from this project, and 10% of direct video sales, that it was very unlikely that (from his experience) we would receive any substantial compensation from our participation, and we were not unhappy with that arrangement.
Our decision to do it was not motivated from the idea of making money from it, (unless there was profit to share) but because we were stimulated by the excitement of this beautiful producer, and when we met her and her beautiful crew, we easily loved them all.
Delay in Airing
As time went by, it became apparent that the television network that we had been told would air “The Secret” was not going to do it, at least not right now, and so the production company began seeking other ways of marketing their beautiful project to recoup their very large investment. While Jerry and I were uncomfortable with what felt to us like a rather aggressive marketing campaign (just not our style, nothing wrong with it) we stayed focused on our busy schedule and really had very little to do with what was happening with “The Secret.”
The Omittance
Eventually we received an email from the producer of “The Secret” lovingly explaining (we never have received correspondence from her that was anything other than extremely loving) that the contract that we had all agreed upon and signed was no longer sufficient for their further distribution of the project in the areas they were now seeking to distribute the project, and that it would be necessary for us to relinquish our intellectual property rights in these areas forever and redo our contract or they would have to reluctantly edit us out.
It was clear, from the lovingly written email that they did not want to edit us out, but after conferring with our publisher, and then our intellectual property rights attorney, and finally with Abraham, allowing them to edit us out was the path of least resistance. Abraham’s words were very clear and easy to understand: “Whenever you are given an ultimatum that says, ‘if you don’t do this, then we will have to do such and such,’ it is best that you just let it go and move on. Otherwise there is always another, and this, and this, and this?”
The Backlash
Now, it seems there is quite a firestorm surrounding our dis-involvement with “The Secret”. We are receiving so many emails and letters and face-to-face questions from disappointed people regarding this, so we want you to understand how we feel about it.
No Hard feelings
We think that “The Secret” clearly and beautifully presents Abraham’s Law of Attraction in a way that is easy to understand. It is filled with stunning beauty and beautiful people, many of whom are our personal friends. We love the way “The Secret” moves us, and we feel joy rise within our hearts every time we watch it. We feel the power of it, and the clarity of it, and we love “The Secret”.
After hours of digging I found this statement on an Abraham Hicks forum:
Check out the full statement here>>
So. . .
Despite the omission Esther and Jerry are still enjoying the rapid expansion of the message of the teachings of Abraham and are happy to see it more and more prevalent in the public eye.
I thought I’d share how the Abraham Teachings have been used to explain the Law of Attraction.
Here’s 12 Lessons of Abraham-Hicks’ Teachings
“1. You are a Physical Extension of that which is Non-physical.
2. You are here in this body because you chose to be here.
3. The basis of your life is Freedom; the purpose of your life is Joy.
4. You are a creator; you create with your every thought.
5. Anything that you can imagine is yours to be or do or have.
6. You are choosing your creations as you are choosing your thoughts.
7. The Universe adores you; for it knows your broadest intentions.
8. Relax into your natural Well-being. All is well. (Really it is!)
9. You are a creator of thoughtways on your unique path of joy.
10. Actions to be taken and money to be exchanged are by-products of your focus on joy.
11. You may appropriately depart your body without illness or pain.
12. You cannot die; you are Everlasting Life”

Depends on what perspective of what one percieves. In a true relationship of understanding, each followed thier own path. Each are in thier own rights in doings. The explanation was grateful, graceful for giving of what one thought best. And may blessing for each and all for the betterment of all mankind.Esther and Jerry Hicks have done greatness for many. And are an asset to humanity for growth. The secret was a benifit for mankind to truly see publicly exposed. Graditute will go to the rightful place of ownership, it’s like water, it seeks its own level.

thanks nancy, for sharing your thoughts. Yes, Esther and Jerry are truly wonderful. I consider their book, “the Law of Attraction”, a remarkable and life-changing piece of text

Today’s date is 4/5/07 and I just heard a broadcast on XM Online of Oprah & Friends interview Esther Hicks and Abraham. Oprah made the statement that she chose to the interview or radio as opposed to her TV show because her maintream television is not ready to have her interview a “channeled entity.” (my emphasis). She may be right. What I think she was really saying is that she was unwilling to risk her credibility as a woman of powerful influence by giving credibility to something this is still considered too far “out there” and weird by the general public. That said, it was obvious in listening to the discuss that Oprah is well aware of the principles of the law of attraction and other metaphysical laws of the Universe.
With regard to Esther and Jerry Hicks, the law is responding in marvelous ways for them, as well as a result of the success of The Secret. Esther Hicks is selling more books than ever before as people seek out more in-depth material after veiwing The Secret movie.
In addition to having Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith, James Ray and other teachers from the secret on her show, perhaps Oprah should have risked having Esther and Jerry on, as well… maybe the public is more ready than she realized.

I was one of the many who paid the $4.95 to watch The Secret on the day it was released, and while it was a great production, the concepts were far from new. I’ve been studying similar principles for the last 25 years, and used them successfully to conquer alcoholism, drug abuse, a 14-year cigarette habit; and in 2003, to make the leap from employee to owning my own web design business. I was introduced to Jerry and Esther Hicks’ work with Abraham in 2004, so it was a pleasure to see that they were a part of The Secret. However, I do not consider their subsequent omission at all perplexing.
The Secret, while beautifully crafted and chock full of good stuff, has the feel of a great marketing campaign. If you buy into the movie’s title, a “Secret” has been carefully guarded and kept from the general population for centuries. This simply is not true. All of the great masters have been telling us this stuff for thousands of years. “Ask and ye shall receive”; “What ye sow, so shall ye reap”. The concepts are not secret; they’re just not well understood and utilized by the masses. We therefore create by default.
One of the first great works for creating your life purposefully was written by Charles F. Haanel in 1912. Jerry and Esther have been teaching the Law of Attraction for 20 years, and Ghalil masterfully presented the material from a fresh perspective in 2005 with her book “Professional Dreamer”. So, “The Secret” is not really a secret after all. What it is is a giant money machine. And like so many money machines before them, when the monetary gains becomes that substantial, the business end of it can sometimes take precedence. For them to want to rewrite Jerry and Esther’s contract is on par with big business. No surprise there!
But I’m not against this movement “The Secret” has become. On the contrary, I think the folks behind it are brilliant and the underlying message extremely vital. What I love about it most is that it successfully brought the Law of Attraction to the masses; and perhaps because of the way it was presented, had a much greater impact than previous attempts. When all is said and done, this is a good thing.

My take on this from the Abe-Hicks discussion groups on Yahoo is that no harm is done. “The Secret” is like an elementary school offering. It is like taking math, you start with counting and addition and subtraction. If you want to advance on to calculus, you don’t have to, but if you want to you can. And then on to Quantum Physics.
In response to Anthony, we need to be a touch more sensitive. Many of us have taken advanced math and have known about Seth, and Abraham and The basics of the Secret Teachings for many, many years. But there are lots of folks out there that are still in elementary school and never wanted to go further in their learning.
“What the Bleep” was a wonderful introduction but was a bit over the heads of many folks. I think that is why “The Secret” is so well received. It is so easy, even a child can understand it. It is directed to folks that are beginning the path…and is a great refresher course for those of us that are well on our way.
I am so excited. If you go to a site called Global MindShift, you will find many advanced videos of why this time period is so important. This site here and so many are contributing to the new dawn.
I could not be more excited than to see “The Secret” in Costco….the more people that open up to these ideas the faster comes humankinds evolution…WHEW what fun….what contrast..

I guess I have the first version of the movie THE SECRET because I have Esther Hicks speaking in the movie, and I remember telling my son many times that for some reason I preferred her sayings and voice in the movie because somehow the energy was the most strongest to me. I am surprised that she is not in the movie anymore, as she was important, in my opinion. I also have the book and when I saw she was excluded, I had a feeling it had to do with the “business” part of it. When I saw what she said in the movie portrayed as if someone else said it in the book, I was so surprised and wondered if it were allowed. The message of the movie is really well made and good, and I am happy that finally the world is responding to such a thing because it is important information, in my opinion.

I am a devotee of The Secret and Esther and Jerry Hicks. But I have to admit that learning about why Esther was edited from the film dissapoints me greatly. I was always a little concerned about how many of the Secret teachers dwelled on getting rich - an easy trap to fall into once people become wealthy - and this revelation contributes to my sad observation that greed can motivate even the most “enightened.” This won’t deter my practice of those princples, since the Law of Attraction is not about book deals or DVDs or teachers or even Oprah. It is about learning about oneself, choosing a life path, and being true to that path - being in vibrational allignment with one’s hopes and dreams.

That which is of the spirit is of the spirit. That which is not is not. There is great wonder and gratitude that the secret assists spirit in human form in a first cognitive reality - material comfort through establishing contact with spirit. Experience with the secret gives tremendous awareness of manifesting beyond material to seek abilities to help and heal others as well as the planet, the universe gift of compassion and unconditional love to give to others and to change negative energy by bringing love and light to all awarenesses, the ability to say to the Universe that I wish to evolve spiritually to the completion of my spirits journey as human. I think that is why there is no conflict with Esther and Jerry Hicks. They trust and have faith in what is beyond the physical, quantifiable, intellectual, “realities” that we bump in to. If nothing else Esther and Jerry have taught the secret of unconditional faith and love. By their faith, and love they continue to show us the way.

Has no one heard of Edgar Cayce or Napoleon Hill? No disrespect to Esther or Abraham, however, the Law of Attraction has been around a long time. The channelings of Edgar Cayce from the 30’s and 40’s as well as Hill’s Think and Grow Rich taught this long before Esther. It certainly bears repeating and how wonderful that Ms Hicks has done so. In fairness, I think the Universal Laws, as laid out in Lin Cochran’s 1989 Edgar Cayce on the Secrets of the Universe and How to Use Them, might best be considered in the public domain for centuries and not first put forward by Ms Hicks.
It would not surprise me that Abraham is the same or similar group of entities channeled by Cayce and probably by other talented trance mediums over a very long time.

I am thrilled that The Secret, in its drama and simplicity, reaches so many people. Wayne Dyer, in “There is a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem” points to the possiblity that, with a sufficient number of people creating peace in our minds, a critical mass can be achieved. As people educated in the laws of the universe, we can make a tremendous difference in the experience of mankind. I have been studying The Law of Attraction with Esther and Jerry Hicks since 1998. The Secret adds to the basic work beautifully. There can hardly be too many reminders that we create our own reality moment by moment.

I have recently returned from a trip to India and just wonder how much the law of attraction can manifest itself to the average person there. The law must surely be based on the fact that there is a “pot” that if you ask the universe without selfishness or ego, your thoughts will attract the means for you to be satisfied. My point is that the end result in india i feel will be considerably less from the pot than in America. However going by some of the remarkable people i saw there who are genuinly happy with very little, it would in my view be more realistic for many people in the west to appreciate what they have and not expect too much more.

I have only seen the new extended version of The Secret (it was loaned to me) which does omit Esther Hicks. In order to determine if the new movie’s message suffers by leaving out what Esther said in the Original Version of The Secret, we need to know what exactly Esther said in the movie. If someone would be so kind to contribute those quotes to this discussion that would be extremely helpful. I personally love the teachings of Abraham that Esther and Jerry Hicks have help bring to the world. I have read their books “Ask and It Is Given”, “The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent” and “The Law of Attraction”; I wish them every blessing possible for their good works. I believe that Rhonda Byrne made an error in judge in asking Esther and Jerry Hicks “to relinquish our intellectual property rights in these areas forever and redo our contract or they would have to reluctantly edit us out. “ therefore I will not buy any of the new Secret products: DVD, or book, or CD because they excluded Esther Hicks. I am grateful that the discussion throughout the internet of the omission of Esther Hicks’ message has generated Esther and Jerry Hicks additional attention in the world. I am grateful that the movie The Secret is out in the world in whatever version helping people have what they really want in their lives. – Joy to all.

I think The Secret is much better because Esther and Jerry are not in it. While I can not confirm or deny Esther’s ability to channel Abraham; I do know that thinking people find this quite silly. The ridiculously sounding voice that she makes and her poorly put on British accent really makes the two of them seem like two carnival hucksters. This “show” that they put on greatly reduces the value of the message. The Secret does a great job of presenting the Law of Attraction in a straight forward manner.
I am bothered that tweedle dee and tweedle dumb are now trying to tell people that The Secret is based on their work. This is no more true than my assertion that my checkbook balances because of my discovery of mathematics.
These 2 dopes did not invent or creat the Law of Attraction - There are countless books including Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” that predate their so called invention.
They have a new way to present and old idea - leave it at that.

I’m glad Esther Hicks and Abraham teachings were not put down in my eyes by participating in The Secret.
The Secret is a beautifully crafted marketing campaign. One of the very few advertising pieces that people actually pay money for, voluntarily.
Esther Hicks is a real stuff. The Secret is a watered down story, so that general public gets it, and that “the herd” can follow, or, more probably, just view few times and feel good about. But the real stuff…..
I feel it’s good Hicks and Abraham are not associated with that kind of stuff.

It is obvious that David (April 24th) is not on MY path. I felt very uncomfortable reading his contribution with his narrowness of mind. Rather than “thinking people” finding Esther’s ability to channel quite silly, my opinion is that it is UNTHINKING people who would sluff this off as he does. From his negative and insulting comments in the way he describes Esther and Jerry, he obviously does not understand the Secret nor has he learned anything from it.

Rumors has it Esther Hicks has multiple personality disorder and cracked up after her Amway downline went down the tubes
I must be living in a vacuum.
When did it become viable to follow the teachings of the insane?
Maybe I should grab a few of the shopping cart people in the hood that go around talking to their invisible friends and cash in on it, hey?
Their entities are just as real to them too.
So are they liars?
And how about that Charles Manson?
What a clever one he was
He convinced even college grads that murdering people was a loving act and he was Jesus Christ.
Speaking of Edgar Cayce, he admitted at the end of his life that he realized his channeling was not from anything benevolant but indeed from satan and dwellers on the threshold.

Its no secret its been around for ages…what bothers me is how this version dismisses and diminshes the suffering that is and has been on the planet. Mother Theres would have been mortified to see her words quoted in this context and horrified to read that the people she spent a lifetime nursing brought their problems on themselves because they lacked a positive attitude.

The Secret is really no secret. It was set in place long before any of us by The Word. That is Jesus the Son of God. Interestlingly enough most of the teachings in “The Secret” can be supported by Scripture. And in John 8:58 it CLEARLY says “Before ABRAHAM was, I AM” The sadest thing that to me is propagated by the “teachings of Abraham”, is that it basically comes down to what caused the fall of man in the first place- SELF SERVICE. And as the original fall of man was based on the “LIE” -”Thou shalt NOT surely die”, after God Himself had told Adam & Eve “if you sin you SHALL DIE” is one of their teachings! Go ahead DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY!! You can’t get it wrong and you WON’T DIE! And for those of you reading this that don’t believe in the God, Jesus or the Bible. Well, I would dare say that if I’m wrong, I am loosing nothing. If Abraham-Hicks is wrong… Then may God have mercy on them and all those they are misleading with their lies. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, and that is NO Secret! Amen~

“Rumors has it Esther Hicks has multiple personality disorder and cracked up after her Amway downline went down the tubes. WHERE DID YOU HEAR THAT? OR ARE YOU JUST GOSSIPING?
I must be living in a vacuum.
When did it become viable to follow the teachings of the insane? HOW DO WE KNOW THAT YOUR NOT INSANE AND WHY SHOULD I FOLLOW YOUR “TEACHINGS?” What are your creditials? What do you do for a living?
Maybe I should grab a few of the shopping cart people in the hood that go around talking to their invisible friends and cash in on it, hey?
Their entities are just as real to them too.
So are they liars?
THE HOMELESS YOUR REFERRING TO ARE MOSTLY MENTALLY ILL, ARE YOU MAKING FUN OF THEIR MISFORTUNE?
And how about that Charles Manson?
What a clever one he was
He convinced even college grads that murdering people was a loving act and he was Jesus Christ.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING? I DON’T HEAR ABRAHAM or ESTHER TELLING YOU TO GO KILL PEOPLE? WHAT’S YOUR POINT? MAYBE YOU ARE INSANE?
Speaking of Edgar Cayce, he admitted at the end of his life that he realized his channeling was not from anything benevolant but indeed from satan and dwellers on the threshold.
SHOW YOUR PROOF ON THAT. HOWEVER JUST BECAUSE HE SAYS THIS SUPPOSEDLY DOESN’T PROVE THAT ALL CHANNELLERS FRAUDS. THAT’S JUST HIS OPINION IF WHAT YOU SAY IS TRUE.
You peeps are scaring me being so easily manipulated by dark forces”
RIGHT — JERRY AND ESTHER ARE DARK FORCES…ALL THE TALK ABOUT IS OPENING YOURSELF UP TO A FEELING OF WELL-BEING AND STOP FOCUSING ON NEGATIVE BELIEFS THAT KEEP YOU TRAPPED IN THE STATUS QUO OF THE PAST. HOW IS THAT DARK?
Either what Esther or Abraham says makes sense for you or it doesn’t. But why the anger? Are you jealous of their success? I’ve read and heard a lot of their books and tapes and found nothing “evil” or satanic. Nothing but positive good sense ideas presented in ways that seem to me to be beyond the boundaries what ordinary mortals can know to be true.

You are a friggen’ rocket scientist? Jerry and Esther have been at this for 21 years before the Secret ever came into fruition.
Their lives prove the law of attraction just in the way that their word has spread and their successful “business” that is an offshoot of that.
What do you do? Work at McDonalds? How much in debt are you.
Instead of putting them down, open your mind, listen to their tapes, read their books, if you weren’t so ignorant you might learn something to improve your life.

I’ve been reading all your posts and though I feel like I know very little about Esther and Jerry Hicks, I have a few thoughts I’d like to share with you. To make my point I need to tell you how and why I got ‘The Secret’ and ‘The Law of Attraction’, so please forgive me if I’m a bit long!
I bought ‘The Secret’ book a couple of monthes ago, and watched ‘The Secret’ DVD just after(so it was the extended version). When I bought the book, I also got ‘The Law of Attraction’, that was right next to ‘The Secret’ in the bookstore. I must admit that I wouldn’t have bought it if it hadn’t stated ‘the secret behind The Secret’ on the front cover. The reason is that I already read several books about the law of attraction, and I didn’t feel the need for one more - after all they all teach the same principles.
There you might wonder why then I wanted to read and to know more about ‘The Secret’. Well, it’s simple, it was the first time such teachings were presented in such a way (with all the marketing and all), and I felt thrilled about that. I also thought that it could be a good refreshment course, and I wasn’t disappointed (I wasn’t expecting to get ALL the details, just a good, motivating, thought-shifting, easy-accessed book/film.)
I was a little surprised not to find any mention of the authors of ‘The Law of Attraction’ in ‘The Secret’ book or film. (Some other teachers are present in the book but NOT in the film).
Why then the authors would mention ‘The Secret’ on their front cover?
Well, I wasn’t really interested in the answer so I didn’t look further into it, until today.
I finally started to read ‘The Law of Attraction’ (I had made a first attempt but found the way it was written a little hard to follow sometimes - nothing about the writing, it’s just that English is not my first language). The little glimpse I had at first also gave me a kind of unease feeling about the way Abraham express themselves sometimes. Anyway…
To my surprise this morning I read the back cover and here’s what I found: “Esther Hicks is the star of the first version of the best selling DVD The Secret, but felt that the film did not honour the contract that she had made with its producer and so asked that she be cut out of the current version.”
…. I must say it puzzled me and gave me another ‘unease’ feeling. Indeed, this statement comes first on the back cover, and it sounds someway a little ‘bitter’.
To me, there’s a contradiction between the amount of times Esther Hicks says ‘loving people’, ‘nice’, ‘loving way’, ‘lovingly’ etc (a little too much to be sincere???), in her interview about what happened with the Secret producers, and that statement that comes first on the back cover of her book, statement that is clearly there for the publicity of this very book, and that can’t help but give a ‘not-so-nice’ image of the people of The Secret.
So well, we must know that marketing and contracts, intellectual property, etc, are unavoidable even when the business is about ’spiritual things’. So I guess both parts (The Secret producers & Esther and Jerry Hicks) knew what they were doing (and followed the advice given by professionals) and did it the best way possible to feel everything was right and in accordance with their objectives.
But I can’t help having this feeling that MAYBE, Esther and Jerry Hicks NOW feel that they should have gone with it. Otherwise, why would they use ‘The Secret’ for their own publicity?
Finally, I feel, again, unease, reading or hearing what they say in a way that let people think that THEY are the first (?) to have brought these teachings to the public.
Not only Napoleon Hill (in the 20’s), but also Florence Scovel-Schinn (in the 20’s, before Napoleon Hill, and then in the 40’s), Dr Joseph Murphy (in the 60’s), and more recently, Sanaya Roman and her guide Orin (’Living With Joy’, 1986, followed by other wonderful books, in particular the EXCELLENT ‘Creating Money’ in 1988, based on seminars they had been given for years), teach the same principles.
So well, to answer the question, I don’t think that the omission of Esther and Jerry Hicks detract from ‘The Secret’…
And in conclusion, I would say that we are all human!
November 26th, 2007 at 3:45 am
Sorry, made a little mistake (probably not just one but I just saw this one, lol):
About the book ‘Creating Money’ by Sanaya Roman, I meant “based on seminars they had been giving for years”.

Steph:
Ester and Jerry Hicks have never proclaimed to be the law of attraction pioneers. Jerry himself talks about learning about it from Napoleon Hill and others. They are just interpreting it from their perspective and experience. Esther herself said that they were not comfortable with the way the Secret was being marketed as it did not tell the whole story or the allowing part of it. The Secret is marketed with their book because they want people to get the whole story not because they want to sell books. I could not agree with the Hicks more. It is a good thing that this information is out, but people need to understand and know all that’s involved. It is not a quick get rich scheme. It is a process that takes time and effort to change one’s beliefs. The Hicks never promote material wealth as they know that it is a state of mind that one must work on. A seed has been planted and now people must look within for the guidance and answers and that’s what Abraham teaches.

It goes without saying that Esther has a powerful way of putting words together and making them jell no disrespect to the work Rhonda put together, but you robbed people that got hold of the edited version of the real Secret. When Mrs Hicks speaks she has ownership of words no exception my friend bought the edited version and she kept bugging me on the unavailability of Esther’s clips so i was forced to copy for her the one Esther was on they dominate the Secret with Beckwith great way of putting things together……..
July 16th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Seriously, why are you guys so upset about this. If Ester, Jerry & Abraham as well as the producers of The Secret are ok with how things turned out, why can’t you? The Secret has been a great medium to introducing people to the law of attraction and taking responsibility for their thoughts and actions. Abraham is saying the same thing but with more detail and not so focused on the money aspect. Neither is better or worse, just different. Remember money holds no value in itself, it is what you do with it that gives it value.
Believe or don’t it’s up to you, just try not to get so upset about the whole thing. Enjoy instead
